Salisbury School Gardens Pilot Project

Salisbury Greenhouse is getting ready for the fourth year of our School Gardens project. Over the past three school years we, along with the schools, have established gardens on the grounds of 14 Elk Island Board schools. With the great success at each location, we are gearing up for 5 more schools for the 2016/17 school year.

Get Involved for the 2016/17 School Year

We’re inspired by the natural Curiosity and passion that children glean from nature, and want to encourage that while helping foster good nutritional habits and a love of gardening.

Salisbury has been a fixture in Strathcona County for 50 years, and we want to give back to our community by offering our resources, as passionate gardeners, to educators in order to enrich our childrens’ educational experience and nurture a love of growing in the next generation of gardeners.

Our vision for this project is enrichment over the long term. We hope that, if we can establish gardens in 5 schools each year, the excitement will become infectious and many more schools will want to take part all through the Edmonton area.

Our Salisbury School Garden Project Schools:

We are still in the planning stages for the coming school year. Schools must have applications submit by September 30th, 2016. Apply to get your school involved in the next stage!

After the closing date we will review all schools who have applied and select 5 schools to add for the 2016/17  school year. You will be notified shortly after so we can set up your garden beds in the approved location.

Strathcona Transportation & Agricultural Services will have your 2- 4′ x 10′ garden bed set up and ready to go for the 2017 growing season. Salisbury Greenhouse will supply all the tools and materials required to get your garden growing.

What you grow in your garden and how it is incorporated into your curriculum is entirely up to you. You will also be responsible for the maintenance & care of your garden. For ideas on curriculum check out the resources area.

If your school is in the Elk Island School board in Strathcona County, you can get involved right now! If your school is outside Strathcona County or part of an alternate school board, start spreading the news and get your community involved so your school can start growing!

We encourage you to get involved and contact the schools to see how you can help out.
